MACHINA
Stanford’s Symbolic Systems Society’s Annual Academic Journal
About
Stanford’s Symbolic Systems Society is a student organization representing the Symbolic Systems major. I have been the design lead for this club since the fall of my freshman year of university. The club typically published an annual journal consisting of select excellent papers written within the major, but had not seen a published journal since 2022 due to lack of designers active. When I joined, I became the society’s design lead, and single-handedly designed the journal, leading to the first publication of Machina in three years. The journal is set to be printed in winter of 2025.
Process & Tools
As the only designer on the Journal team, I designed each and every page in this journal. After thorough rounds of literature editing and review, I began iterating between fonts, layouts, and color palette to establish a consistent and clear design. The layout was created using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.
